Questions about Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a complete healthcare system with a wide range of benefits. With its origins in China, acupuncture is gaining recognition as an important complement to western medicine. The World Health Organization states that acupuncture is of benefit with 40 different types of disease. The National Institutes of Health has endorsed acupuncture as an effective and safe form of therapy.

How does it work?

Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles and moxibustion (a warming process) to stimulate the body’s self-healing power. For thousands of years, Chinese doctors observed the effects that each acupuncture point had on physical, as well as mental and emotional health. According to traditional Oriental medical theory, the body has 12 main channels, called meridians, through which the energy of life, called ch’i flows. Excess, deficient, or obstructed ch’i causes pain or disease. Acupuncture promotes the harmonious movement of ch’i which enhances the immune system and decreases pain.

Could I benefit from acupuncture?

Yes. Acupuncture can help with:
  • Chronic symptoms not addressed by western medicine.
  • Pain, for example: headaches, back pain, and arthritis.
  • Recovery from surgery and traumatic injuries.
  • Transitions through life changes.
  • Integration of strong emotions.
  • Immune system dysfunctions, such as allergies, chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia.
  • Menstrual disorders and infertility.
  • Mood disorders such as depression, irritability, insomnia, and anxiety.
  • Disorders of the body’s systems: digestive, respiratory, elimination.
  • Reduction in the side effects of some western medical treatments.
My Patients report:
  • Decreased pain and stiffness
  • Better mood
  • Increased energy and self-confidence
  • Relaxation
  • Relief from symptoms due to stress and disease

Do the needles hurt?

Sometimes you will feel nothing during the insertion of an acupuncture needle; sometimes a momentary ache or tingling sensation or the feeling of traveling warmth. Only a few needles are used during each treatment. Acupuncture needles are hair thin and flexible. They are sterile and disposed of after one use.

What is the relationship between acupuncture and other medical care?

Acupuncture practitioners cooperate with other healthcare providers and do not recommend altering medications or other therapies without consulting with your physician.
